Inverell hosted the 23rd Aboriginal Elders Olympics between 9-11 April, welcoming over 300 Aboriginal Elders and their supporters. This esteemed event, celebrates cultural heritage and community spirit and was organised by the Inverell Bear Eaters Elders Group, who earned the hosting rights after their victory in 2024.
The Elders Olympics started in 2001 and each year brings Aboriginal Elders together from across NSW. The Olympics features a variety of games including coits, hockey, darts, Netball hoops and a walking relay. Also featured are social activities, culminating in an awards ceremony. It fosters well-being and camaraderie among participants. Historically, such gatherings have provided significant boosts to local economies through increased tourism and community engagement.
This year, Heritage Now sponsored the Indigenous team - Ashford Mob (from Kwiambal Country) captained by Michael Green OAM (pictured), who emphasises that the “Elders Olympics is important for bringing teams from many Nations of NSW, connecting communities together and is a time for competing, celebrating and reuniting with family and friends and mixing with the Mob.” When asked what his favourite event was, Michael replied “I’m a challenger, I like them all.” Ashford hasn’t had a team in the Olympics since the games began.
The 2025 Aboriginal Elders Olympics was a memorable celebration of Aboriginal culture, unity, and the enduring spirit of the Elders, offering participants and attendees an opportunity to engage deeply with the rich traditions of the community.
